Social Media Security Alert
In an effort to protect customer information, we may periodically send communications via letter, email, webpage or newsletter, informing our customers of security alerts we have been made aware of. Please remember that we will never ask you to verify personal and/or account information in these communications.
Recently we were alerted to the following security issue that we are sharing with our customers.
Please Be Advised – that a current computer worm called “Ramnit” has been linked to the compromise of more than 45,000 Facebook log-in credentials, primarily hitting users in the United Kingdom and France.
“Officials suspect that the attackers behind Ramnit are using the stolen credentials to log into victims' Facebook accounts and to transmit malicious links to their friends, thereby magnifying the malware's spread even further," according to information posted by security firm Seculert on January 5, 2012. "In addition, cybercriminals are taking advantage of the fact that users tend to use the same password in various web-based services to gain remote access to corporate networks."
First Federal Lakewood advises you to take the following precautions to protect your computer and accounts:
- Do not use the same passwords for Facebook and other social media sites that you use for online banking.
- Check your balances often to watch for unauthorized withdrawals or transfers.
- Keep your virus definitions and computer patches up to date.
- Do not turn off your computer firewalls.
- Do not open emails from people you do not know.
- Do not befriend people on Facebook you do not know.
